Colonial Installation
Classical/Colonial Install 1: Measure railing opening, from post to post.
Classic/Colonial Install 2: Cut top and bottom 2x4s to length. Sandwich 2x4s together. Starting from the Center of the 2x4 rails, mark out 4 5/8" on center using DecKorators Easy Mark template.A tape measure or marked speed square will work. This will leave a 3 5/8" opening from baluster to baluster once the balusters are installed.
Classical/Colonial Install 3: Screw on DecKorators Baluster Connectors on each mark. Put Silicone caulk on connectors to adhere baluster, preventing baluster and centerpieces from turning. (Optional: Drill ¾" hole, ¾" deep. Silicone caulk all holes to protect from moisture). Do Not use this method with treated Lumber, as treated lumber can be corrosive when in contact with aluminum. Use DecKorators Balusters Connectors.
Classical/Colonial Install 4: Place the Bottom Rail on 1 ½" blocks (2x4 on side) and attach to post. Consider using Railing Connectors. Insert Baluster over Baluster Connectors.Optional: Put Silicone caulk on Connectors to adhere balusters, preventing balusters and Centerpieces from turning.
Classical/Colonial Install 5: Place top rail (2x4) on over balusters. Install top 2x rail cap.
Classical/Colonial Install DecKorators recommends using rail support blocks for sections over 6 foot. Toenail support block to bottom 2 X 4 and to the deck to secure.
Classical/Colonial Install Drilling Method
Classical/Colonial Install 6: Cut stair rails at the proper angle. Set stair posts and lay both top and bottom 2x4s on the treads next to the post and then mark.
Classical/Colonial Install 7: Lay top and bottom 2x4s next to each other with the top 2x4 turned upside down. Align 2x4s edges like photo. Mark 5 1/2” on center, out from center. Attach Stair Connectors. Notice the bottom 2x4 connectors are pointing in the opposite direction as connectors on the top 2x4.
Classical/Colonial Install 8: IMPORTANT: Screw the connectors into the 2x4 vertically a bit first to get it started, then move the screw back to the right angle to finish. DO NOT over tighten, this can cause the connector to move off center. SCREW DOWN SLOWLY TO A SNUG FIT.
Classical/Colonial Install 9: Make sure the connectors are aligned. Assemble top and bottom 2x4 with balusters First, then attach Full rail section between post.Note: Stair connectors are designed for 30-35 degree angles. Using 26” balusters you will have over 37” rail height. Therefore you may need to run the bottom 2x4 along the side of stringer, rather than on the nose of the treads.
