The installation of the four components of the
ROT NOT DECK PROTECTION SYSTEM takes mere
seconds, and requires no additional tool, other
than those already on the site.
Designed to fit snuggly over all of the
individual locations required. Simply
follow the steps provided, and your deck will
remain rot free for many years to follow.
The best way of cutting the units (if required)
is to use the cutoff saw on site, or a pair of
vinyl cutters. Always be sure to use
safety glasses When cutting with electrical
tools. |
Ledger Cap
|

Ledger Cap |
| The Ledger Cap is SNAPPED
in place once the ledger board has
been fastened to the house.
Prior to tightening up the lag bots,
place the Ledger Cap in place on the
ledger board. Once in place,
apply a generous amount of exterior
caulking to the backside of the
Ledger Cap. Once the caulking
is in place, proceed to tighten the
lag bolts to the desired tightness.
When completed, the caulking will
provide a continuous bead along with
the Ledger Cap and the house.
On a renovated deck, this may
require a small pry bar to open the
necessary spacing needed (.250) to
allow the cap to fit. |

Single Joist Cap
|

Single Joist Cap |
| The Single Joist
Cap covers the main joists and
bridging of the decks structure, and
takes seconds to install. Be
sure to leave your bridging down
from the joist 3/8", to allow the
single joist to pass freely.
When installing the individual joist
into their hanger locations, simply
make a cut on a 45-degree angle (see
photo) on the top of the joist.
This will allow the Ledger Cap to
pass clear of the joist. In
many cases the top edge of the joist
are already not square, and
therefore provide the necessary
clearance. In the even that
your deck extends past the 8' length
of Joist Cap, the option is yours as
to whether you cover the joints of
the two Joist Caps with silicone, or
just leave them butting up against
each other. A good rule of
thumb is that if the joint is going
to be exposed, you seal it, and if
the joint is covered by the
planking, then just leave it.
The Single or Double Joist Cap may
also be required on the building of
your deck stairs! |

Double Joist Cap
|

Double joist Cap |
| The Double Joist
Cap is used on the main beam
structure, when the joists are
supported by the beam being
constructed as a compressive state
rather than when it is used as a
suspended sate (beam is separated by
the post). The Double Joist
Cap is also used at locations where
the joist are joined to provide for
wider decks. (The beam if used
in the compressive state) need to be
crowned and have the boards fastened
so that if there is any cupping in
the wood, they are fastened, so that
the top of the inside edges, are
touching. So, in simple terms,
keep the crowns up and put them
together like two C's. In
renovated decks it may be necessary
to use a large C clamp, to draw them
back together and re-nail or screw
prior to installing the Double Joist
Cap. |

Post Protector Saddle
|
(Used for 4"x4" construction)

Post Protector Saddle |
| When
the beam is sitting on top of the
post this is considered to be a
compression load, as opposed to
hanging the beam separated by the
post, which is deemed a suspension
load. The stronger and better
way to build the beam is using the
compression load method. Once
the height of the post has been
determined, place the Post Protector
Saddle on the post and install two
screws on each side. Please
note that the two extended ribs are
to make up for industry tolerances.
Place your screw below these ribs
and tighten until the sides make
contact with the post. In the
event that the posts in question are
larger, remove one if not both of
the ribs by scoring with a utility
knife and bending backwards.
Once in place, install the beam in
its desired location. Using 4"
decking screws, screw through the
top flange of the Post Protector
Saddle Cap on a 45-degree angle,
through the beam itself, and into
the top of the beam. |
